The banding station may have closed for the season, but migrants are still moving through the ranch. This week, we had thousands of Sandhill Cranes flying overhead. The sound of their call is unmistakable. You hear it first, then search the skies for several minutes until a flock of cranes comes into sight. Many simply passed over, heading south to their wintering grounds in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and northern Mexico, but a few flocks landed at the Rose Pond near headquarters. The new wildlife is just one of the reasons that fall is my favorite season on the ranch!
