Making a Hand

We branded Tuesday and Wednesday, possibly for the last time this year. We were joined by a crew from the Zapata as well as friends and family from as far away as California, Texas, and Illinois. Many in our crew had never branded before this season, but it’s always amazing how much skill, confidence, and competence each new team member picks up over the course of a year. The patience and teaching ability of the veterans is no small factor

Chico Branding

Today was a special day.  The season’s first branding, later than normal by almost 60 days due to the dry weather.  We haven’t wanted to be distracted from giving the cattle herd all of our attention because of the elevated stress level, so we haven’t branded at all, and instead have focused on putting the entire together along with the horses, into one herd that is rotating around the entire ranch in a migratory pattern.

We met at 3’30 am and

Kenny’s Branding

Yesterday at Kenny’s branding I took Grace and Julie and their friends and we worked most the morning with the rest of the crew helping Kenny brand his calves. This photo is of Grace (behind the calf, holding the rope) helping get a calf down.  It was her 16th birthday and I was so proud of her out there mixing it up with all the boys.

Tomorrow we brand our first group of calves.  It’ll be all day because theres lot

Branding at Zapata Ranch

This is the time of year that, in the past, would be full of photos and stories about one of our favorite activities on the ranch. Branding. The Chico crew has been flat out with other drought induced chores and we have been forced to postpone our branding until later in the season. I have been living and working at our sister ranch, Zapata, and our branding is in full swing here. We had a successful third branding of the

Branding Season is Here!

Branding season is here! Last week Carla and I, plus the two French interns, went over for two days of branding at the Chico. We had another one on Saturday at our good friend George Whitten’s house and three more are coming up next week. This week will be spent doing other things such as fencing, fixing a water leak, a little irrigation and road work with the tractor, and other odds and ends.  Next week, the brandings will include nine guests of

Saguache Branding

On Saturday several of us went to Saguache to help our friends George and Julie with their branding. It is dry there as well but the cows looked good and healthy. It was neat country with a lot of big hills like the one you see behind Jeff in the picture.

Our guests Jess and Carrie from New York camped out the night before with several of the crew and were close by in the morning to help bring the herd

Branding Day Oysters

We had our big branding of the year this week and several guests shared the experience with us. We branded about 150 calves in all and it took about 4 hours. The weather was beautiful, finally spring-like, and there were a lot of firsts for everyone.

In particular, The Beaufils, our guests from France, had several firsts. Most notable was Hugh, who had his first rocky mountain oyster, specially prepared on the branding iron stove.
