    Zapata Tent Camps

“We’ve got an hour before the sun sets, should we ride out and find some bison?”

And so kicked off our camp out on the Medano among the wild bison. A combination of laid-back spontaneity and the freedom of having 55,000 acres to yourself set the tone for the evening. With the tents set up and fire ring built, Kate, Jessie and I had our chores done and could go have some fun. We set off north in search of some

Ride through Medano Meadows

Last Thursday, after spending the morning foraging with Hank for our Butcher, Baker, Ice Cream Maker Workshop, a group of us headed to the Medano to take a ride. David and I took a group who wanted to go faster to Sand Creek. To get there we rode through the meadows by the Wedding Trees and came upon a HUGE herd of elk. Ride to Crestone

Yesterday, Anna, our new wrangler from Australia, and I rode to Crestone from the Sand Dunes with 5 guests. On a trail I knew well in parts, others I had seen once whilst riding in the mountains as a child with my dad and brother and many bits I did not know at all, we set off on an exciting 8 hours. We set off at the beginning of the trail at 9 on the dot and with just one

My first two weeks

My first blog post at Zapata ranch, in just the two weeks I have been here I have had the pleasure of seeing the ranch really come in to spring. When I pulled in there were no leaves on the cottonwoods, there was snow on the dunes and the formidable April wind whipped across the Medano. Now the whole of the ranch is showing its fresh bright baby green colors, it looks beautiful. This weekend we moved the pairs a

Days Outside

I’ve been lucky enough to spend a couple days out of the office these past couple weeks. The first was spent out riding with the Kosmic Kowboys, a group of 12 men from around the US that joined us for a week of riding. We rode on the Medano and the day couldn’t have been more beautiful. These guys were all advanced riders, too, so we covered a ton of the pasture and saw all of the different landscapes that
