Last week we had a light dusting of snow on the ranch that quickly melted away on the prairie floor, but left a little moisture in the mountains. The mountains right now look like they’ve been dusted in powder sugar and usually remain that way until the next snow.
Watching the bison in the early winter morning or in the snow is always a treat as they blow big plumes of air and snort around as they eat. When the clouds …

Tess and I got home on Friday after spending the holidays away and were greeted by a pleasant surprise when we got home.
We’ve seen a large, adult bobcat several times near the lodge in one of the nearby pastures on the Zapata, but never anything around our house and Jeff’s house on the Medano. We were taking the Christmas decorations down and Tess said, hey, look, a cat, no, wait, that’s a bobcat. The bobcat we saw was an adolescent …

You can always expect a nice view when the bison, cattle or horse herds are pastured near the lodge. Some days they’ll be scattered off in the distance or up close in mass. Last week when Tess and I got to the office the managed bison were hanging out along the eastern portion of their pasture and a few of the horses were nearby. Below is the shot of them all grazing. The baking has begun and we are on our …

Our annual bison gather is starting this Friday and is one of the most exciting times of the year. The crew from Chico will be coming over to help and we’ll be gathering the bison into one big pasture for roughly a week or as many days as it will take.
Everyone has been preparing and gearing up for this time. As I write this Asta and Tess are putting together lists upon lists for everything from food to the horses …

The baby swallows around the lodge have been seen running around the sidewalks lately learning how to fly. One made it up to a window ledge and I’m not sure if they’ve mastered their skills enough to make it back up to their nest. The babies we’ve seen run around quickly as they flap their wings and have brief moments of lift off. Hopefully we’ll get to see it when it clicks and they take off. The baby birds are …

A few weeks ago I saw a small little figure moving out of the corner of my eye and turned to see a lone bison calf walking across the ranch. He sat down nearby and lay in the grass resting for a while and it was so weird to see something so tiny and helpless walking around the middle of the ranch by itself.
I thought for sure it was an orphan calf and would be a gonner in a matter of minutes, …

The bison on the Medano side of the ranch roam in a 50,000 acre pasture and depending on their walkabout schedule we might see them every single day for a week or not see a trace for a few weeks.
Yesterday I walked outside and several hundred were milling about and relaxing in the prairie close by.
Sometimes when they are near by you can see the young ones off in the distance chasing each other back and forth, sprinting as fast …

Over the past month, the coyotes have been getting increasingly close to out homes. We all have been attributing this to the change in weather, and have been keeping an extra close eye on our dogs. During the day, we often see them trotting through the fields, eating or drinking along side the bison or cattle, and are reminded of the degree of wilderness in which we live.
